Residents have access to plenty of trails to explore. Whether you want to hike, bike, ski, snowmobile, or ATV, the Down East Sunrise Trail which runs through town is a former railbed and stretches for 87 miles. Also, there’s Bad Little Falls Park which features hiking trails, picnic areas, and scenic viewing areas.
For camping, birding, fishing, hunting, and paddling, the Machias River Corridor is a great spot for these activities and more. The river is one of the largest self sustaining wild Atlantic salmon runs in the country, and the canoe trail will take you through some of the most beautiful countrysides in Maine.
Machias is also home to annual events such as the Machias Harvest Fair, Machias Wild Blueberry Festival, and the Margaretta Days Festival.
